It beats me...

.

I have calmed down a bit now but it beggared belief during the week to learn that a doctor in the US who performed abortions was shot and killed. In a church, to boot.

The so called 'pro-life' lobby seem seriously confused.

It all depends on whether the guy who shot him was churchified or not. He may have been a pro-life atheist who took the view that killing one man could save many other lives.

Put that way, it has a certain logic, albeit that I disagree with both the action and the pro-life lobby.

An illogical, homicidal fanaticist. Scary, isn't it ?

I didnt know about this. How dreadful that someone who is doing something legal can be killed.

The anti-abortion faction (I cannot call them "pro-life" when some of the members kill doctors) has succeeded in making the availability of safe abortions increasingly rare in the U.S. There are not a lot of people willing to risk their lives to perform abortions. I was into my 20's in 1973 when abortions became legal here. I knew several high school and college students who had illegal ones ---and probably since they were illegal, there were some I didn't know about. It concerns me that if safe, legal abortions become unavailable, women will have to choose dangerous black-market or do-it-yourself options. Of course the very people opposed to abortion are also the ones who are opposed to the very things that could reduce the number of abortions: sex education, contraception, condom distribution...

Sorry ---meant to include this link in my previous comment:

This will give you a sampling of the troubling background on Dr. Tiller's accused murderer. The man was a fanatic, anti-government, conspiracy nut, arrested for having explosive materials, and into other fringe organizations including the radical faction of the anti-abortion movement. There are 10 pages of comments about the article, many predictably from the anti-abortion stance.

The pro-life community is "deadly" serious.

I suppose if you kill people who do more abortions, more childrens' lives will be saved. But it does beg huge questions, as Chairman Bill has observed.

Better to have the procedure done in hospital, where you're just another patient.

It's like Bill says, it has a certain logic, but it's not working in that kinda confused mind. Not Bill's, the killer's :) They obviously believe that what that doctor is doing is anti-life, and totally bad news. But they're not karma's foot soldiers, so their own acts are not without fault.

I don't think it's "dreadful that someone doing something legal can be killed." Legal doesn't mean right. The laws of the universe exact their own revenge, and they'll use those with the desire to flaunt their own wayward independence from such laws to do so...
