A bit of a worry.

"This chart depicts the public acceptance of evolution theory in 34 countries in 2005. Adults were asked to respond to the statement: "Human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals." The percentage of respondents who believed this to be true is marked in blue; those who believed it to be false, in red; and those who were not sure, in yellow."

On the surface, the US does not do too well, coming in second last, but there are about 160 more countries (including Australia!) who are not in the list.

Interestingly, the only country below the US is also the only Moslem country in the list.

Does that mean the countries not on the list didn't accept at all? I don't get it. Are you aussies creationists???? I don't think so. I'm pleased to see that France is way up at the top.

I must say my jaw dropped when I saw where the US ranked.

Well, regarding the U.S., you have to remember that many of its citizens are anti-intellectual, and look with disdain on those who are educated. George Bush "folksy-downed" his university education in order to not appear that well educated. Barack Obama made no effort to hide his education (thought he did not flaunt it), and probably lost votes for it.

All of which may help us understand the ranking which th U.S. received.

And what about Australia, Canada, and New Zealand?

I am always skeptical when I see any sort of statistal data reported- too easily manipulated. However, still a scary thought that less than half of those in the US believe in evolution!

Aww... I was lookin' for Canada. I'll just have to write to that Jon D. Miller guy at Michigan State University to ask him to re-do the survey.

Yes, and I wanted to see if Australia cracked it for the top of the pile or not.
